This batch of salve is comprised of our classic lavender, calendula, goldenrod blend, but is supercharged with the addition of fresh comfrey leaf! Comfrey is an incredibly powerful plant that speeds healing by promoting cell turnover. While the root of the plant makes the strongest medicine, I prefer to use the leaves, as they are abundant, fast growing, and efficient healers. Comfrey can be used topically to speed the healing of broken bones and sprained joints and ligaments. I find that topical application of comfrey on sore and painful areas imparts a cooling, analgesic effect.
And now a bit about our main lineup...
Lavender is one of my favorite underestimated healers. In addition to lavenders' well known ability to calm the mind and relax the nerves, it's an effective remedy for preventing and combating infection on surface level cuts and scrapes, and is particularly helpful for soothing burns. Including lavender in a healing salve can provide the double benefit of aromatically easing anxiety while topically aiding wounds during an accidental trip and fall, bee sting, or burn.
Goldenrod is a plant that can be used for a multitude of applications. It grows prolifically throughout North America, making it a wonderful plant to become acquainted with for its ready availability and the low environmental impact when harvesting responsibly. In our salve, goldenrod functions to improve circulation to the area applied, aids in the healing of bruises, and provides relief to fatigued and cramped muscles.
I also just recently found out that goldenrod is the state flower of Kentucky, where I (Emily) grew up!
Calendula is a true friend of the skin in almost any and every capacity! As Victoria so eloquently put it while describing our seasonal calendula-infused lotion,
"Calendula’s vivid, sunny blooms are a topical remedy for almost every skin complaint. Healing, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, eczema, acne… this flower is a beauty powerhouse."
I couldn't have said it better! Calendula helps correct just about any and every skin ailment while providing soothing nourishment.
Chamomile is known for its anti-inflammatory benefits and calming effects. Its natural antibacterial properties help combat blemishes while reducing redness and swelling. Whether you're dealing with minor cuts, scrapes, or dry patches, chamomile's antioxidants and essential oils foster a nurturing environment that accelerates skin repair.
Keep a tin of healing salve handy to use on cuts, scrapes, burns, bruises, tattoos, sunburn, chapped lips, cracked heels...pretty much anywhere that needs a little love!
Warning: Not to be used on deep cuts and wounds. Comfrey is so amazing at accelerating cell growth that it can cause skin to close up over deep wounds too quickly! Use only on surface level cuts, scrapes, and scabs. Use liberally on bruises, pulled muscles, sore joints, broken bones, and sprains.
